The ESRC Centre for Competition Policy (CCP) based Guaranteed Scholarships at the University of East Anglia (UEA), invites applications for a fully funded (3-year) PhD studentship from October 2011. Applications Process

Step 1 – Applying for the relevant course

To be considered for the studentship funding applicants must have been offered a place on the appropriate course. This decision is taken by the relevant School of Study (School of Economics, UEA Law School, School of Political, Social and International Studies and Norwich Business School).

Applicants must therefore apply for the appropriate course through the normal route – via the standard application form.

The application form is available at the Schools admissions pages.

The form should be returned to ONE of the following:

International Office (for all International Students)
Faculty of Social Sciences, Postgraduate Admissions Office (for Home/EU students whose main topic is Business, Law or Economics)
Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Postgraduate Research Office (for Home/EU students whose main topic is Political, Social and International Studies)

In addition to submitting your application, you must contact CCP, preferably by email (s.adcock@uea.ac.uk ) to inform us that you have submitted an application and that you wish to be considered for a CCP studentship. Students holding offers are not automatically considered for these studentships. Please complete and submit the application form in Appendix 2. Applications for the PhD studentships should be accompanied by a research proposal of approximately 2000 words.

This studentship is also available to students who have already been offered a place on the relevant courses.

If you have already applied for a place in a relevant degree programme please send an email to s.adcock@uea.ac.uk stating that you wish to be considered for a CCP studentship and including a completed application form (Appendix 2). If you have applied to a PhD programme please also send a copy of the research proposal.

Please note:

The closing date for PGR applications is 5pm, Tuesday 3rd May 2011. It is your responsibility to ensure that you submit all the relevant information for your application to the Schools by the closing date. Incomp.ete applications will not be considered.
Under Section 8 (Funding) please mention that you are interested in applying for the CCP Studentship. (You may also apply for other sources of funding).

A decision on whether you will be offered a place on the programme of study will be made by the individual schools. You should contact the Postgraduate Admissions Office if you have any queries as to the progress of your application for the course.

Step 2 – Consideration for CCP Studentships

All candidates who have been offered a place in a relevant PhD programme, who have informed CCP that they wish to be considered for a studentship, and who have submitted all the relevant information will be considered.

CCP will consider in early May all applications for funding from students who have already been accepted by the Schools. Applicants will be informed by the end of May 2011.

At this time we will select reserve candidates who will be offered funding should another candidate decline it. You will be informed if you are on this list. We will endeavour to let you know as soon as possible whether you will receive this funding but as it is dependent on decisions from other candidates we cannot guarantee a date.

Once you have been offered studentship funding you will need to confirm your acceptance of it to CCP and liaise with the Postgraduate Admissions Office to ensure that all relevant documentation is returned to the university promptly.

The discipline of Statistics analyses and develops methods to interpret and draw scientific conclusions from data. The main research areas at the Division of Statistics are time series analysis/econometrics and structural equation modelling.

Eligible for a PhD position is the student with a Master degree, completed courses of 240 ECTS points, whereof at least 60 ECTS points on Master level, or equivalent. This project developed from an interdisciplinary Foresight project on Sustainable Energy Management and the Built Environment.

The Exeter element of the project is led by Professor Patrick Devine-Wright in the Geography department within the College of Life and Environment Sciences.

The project is part of the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council’s Sustainable Urban Environments programme.

The postholder will primarily be involved in undertaking detailed case study analyses of 8 UK urban energy initiatives, collecting primary (qualitative and quantitative) and secondary data and engaging in comparative analyses of the aims, approaches and outcomes of each case study.

This work will feed into the project’s main research aim, which is to assess critically the pursuit of decentralised energy systems in urban areas in the light of the need to achieve the UK’s carbon emissions reduction targets for 2020 and 2050, and broader urban sustainability goals.

We are seeking candidates with a relevant PhD and research experience.

Candidates should have excellent research skills, be able to work independently and collaboratively across disciplinary boundaries and be able to conduct fieldwork in locations across the UK.

To further develop Rhodia’s PA66 matrix based composites, numerical simulation is a very important tool : prediction of the manufacturing costs and end-use properties is function of the well-knowledge of the whole process, and of what happens to the different material constituants during forming, since we are dealing with strong heterogeneous media. Globally, we expect a correct impregnation of the fibrous reinforcement through a good control of the process conditions (such as pressure, temperature, …), properties that are directly influencing the permeability of the porous media and its mechanical properties.
The main purpose of this project is to define a numerical database of representative elementary volumes of the composite structure and to compute the associated homogeneised permeability tensors in the saturated and non saturated regimes. Effects of displacement and deformation of the tissue will also be studied. Polymer scientific computation C++ platform Rem3D/Cimlib will be used, based on a monolithic approach (the yarns/polymer/air domains are defined in one single meshed, and interfaces tracked through a level set method) and stabilised mixed finite elements for coupled permeable/non permeable flows.

Contexte et objectif du projet:
Pour le développement des composites à matrice PA66 chez RHODIA, la simulation numérique apparaît comme un atout : la prévision de leur viabilité économique, incluant les coûts de fabrication et les propriétés réelles des composites, ne peut se faire qu’à condition d’avoir une bonne maîtrise du procédé et donc des mécanismes physiques intervenant. Pour tout procédé de fabrication envisagé, il consiste à l’échelle du tissu, à imprégner correctement le renfort en contrôlant les conditions de mise en forme, qui impactent directement les propriétés du composite, i.e. sa perméabilité et son comportement mécanique.
L’objectif general de ce projet est de définir une base de données de volumes élémentaires représentatifs numériques représentatives de différents composites (plusieurs matrices PA66, plusieurs types de renforts) permettant de relier leurs propriétés mécaniques à la qualité de l’imprégnation. Ainsi, des calculs du tenseur de perméabilité homogénéisé à l’échelle du volume de calcul (mésoscopique) avec des matrices polyamides 66, en régime saturé ou non saturé seront réalisés. L’effet de la pré-déformation et de la déformation en cours d’écoulement sera aussi étudié. La plateforme logicielle Rem3D/Cimlib sera utilisée, basée sur une approche monomaillage (le domaine mèches/fibres/air est maillé et les interfaces suivies par une méthode level set) et des éléments finis stabilisés.

This programme is designed to academically qualify future leaders in politics, law, economics and administration according to the principles of Good Governance and to prepare them in a praxis-oriented course for their professional life. The programme offers very good graduates with a first university degree the chance to obtain a Master’s degree in disciplines that are of special relevance for the social, political and economic development of their home country. With the knowledge and experience acquired in Germany the scholarship holders should later contribute to the establishment of democratically oriented economic and social systems aimed at overcoming social tensions. In addition, the training at German institutions of higher education should especially qualify the scholarship holders as partners in political and economic cooperation with Germany. With this programme, DAAD intends to contribute to the support of Good Governance and civil society structures in selected partner countries and regions.

Who can apply?

The scholarship scheme is open to candidates from Africa, Latin America, South Asia, Southeast Asia as well as from countries in the Middle East (see attached list of countries).

Target group

Very well qualified graduates with a first university degree (Bachelor or equivalent) who in the future want to actively contribute to the social and economic development of their home countries. The scholarships are offered both for young graduates without professional experience and for mid-career professionals.

What is fundable?

The scholarships are (generally) for two-year Master courses at a German institution of higher education. The successful candidates will study on one of the selected Master courses listed below. The courses have an international orientation and are taught in German and/or English.

The scholarship holders will study in groups and be offered special tutoring at their host institutions. Furthermore, there is the possibility of networking events for participants in different courses and their attendance at tailor-made summer-schools.

Before taking up their Master studies the scholarship holders will be placed on German courses in Germany for normally 6 months (this also applies to scholarship holders in Master courses taught in English).

DAAD pays a monthly scholarship rate of currently 750 EUR. The scholarship also includes contributions to health insurance in Germany. In addition, DAAD grants an appropriate travel allowance as well as a study and research subsidy and in applicable cases rent subsidies and / or family allowances.

Selection

In addition to the study results achieved so far, the main criterion for selection is a convincing description of the subject-related and personal motivation for the study project in Germany and the expected benefit after the return to the home country.

For Master courses taught in German or in German and English, good knowledge of German (ideally at completed A 2 level at the time of application) is an advantage for being able to pass the German language test required for admission to the Master programme at the end of the six-month preparatory German course. For courses taught in English, proof of good knowledge of English (generally a minimum of 550 TOEFL scores or equivalent) is required.

The university degree should have been obtained during the six years before the application for the scholarship. Applicants cannot be considered if they have been in Germany for more than one year at the time of application.

All Master courses have further additional requirements that must be fulfilled by the applicants at any case.

studying natural selection and evolutionary processes in the salmon louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis

The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) has a three-year PhD studentship (code 1017) available in the Population Genetics and Ecology research group in Bergen to work on experimental studies of natural selection, evolution and genetics in the parasitic copepod, L. salmonis.

The position will be linked to a work-package within the Norwegian Research Council funded project “PrevenT” which is a large inter-institute project studying molecular, epidemiology and evolutionary processes in L. salmonis.

The IMR has a long history of conducting experiments with L. salmonis, and supports a well equipped laboratory in Bergen that includes a rearing facility for conducting experiments on this parasite. Technological advances have provided us with the ability to produce strains of lice (inbred, outbred, drug-resistant and mutant), and family groups. When combined with DNA parentage testing, this system provides the ability to study and manipulate how genotype (individual, family or strain) and environment (temperature, salinity, chemicals, host type) interact for this parasite.

The studentship will be based upon planning and execution of biological experiments in the facility above. Lice family groups will be established by the student and challenged by environmental variables in order to study and quantify selection. These experiments will require meticulous planning and attention to detail. Individual lice surviving the experiments will be identified by parentage testing using microsatellites. Thus, the position will include a mixture of experimental, and some DNA laboratory work

Eligible candidates

We wish to appoint a highly motivated person with a masters degree in a biological discipline. The ideal candidate will be able to document first-hand experience of designing, planning and executing biological experiments, preferably with sea lice, and has experience of basic molecular techniques such as DNA isolations and PCR. However, candidates showing relevant experience with other experimental systems will be considered.

Candidates must meet the admission requirements at the University of Bergen.The Institute emphasizes personal qualities such as good communication and cooperative skills, the ability to work independently and as part of an active research team.

PhD Studentship in Optimisation/Statistics and River Infrastructure Planning 2010

Applications are invited for a full-time PhD studentship in the area of Optimisation/Statistics and River Infrastructure Planning starting in September 2010. The studentship, which is supported through an EPSRC Doctoral Training Grant, will involve working on an interdisciplinary research project entitled “Next Generation Decision Planning Methods for River Infrastructure Placement and Mitigation” under the supervision of Dr Jesse O’Hanley. The main objective of the project is to develop novel optimisation and statistical models for prioritising river infrastructure removal and other mitigation activities, as well as identifying sites for future river infrastructure expansion, while taking into account a host of key environmental/ecological impacts (fish dispersal, habitat fragmentation, river hydrology and morphological processes) and socioeconomic impacts (fishing, recreation, water supply, flood control and hydropower generation). Multi-objective and stochastic integer programming techniques will be investigated together with Bayesian statistical modelling and exact/heuristic solution methods.

The PhD student will join the Management Science group within the Kent Business School. The Management Science group is one of the largest and top rated research groups in the UK. Further advanced training in operational research and statistics is available through the EPSRC’s NATCOR programme. As part of the project, the PhD will also have the opportunity to reside for up to one academic term in the US in order to work and study under the guidance of a leading academic (Prof Michael Kuby) from the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning at Arizona State University, specialising in the field of optimisation and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applied to transportation, energy, and environmental planning. Additional short-term visits to Scotland in order to work and liaise with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, the main external project partner, may also be required.

The studentship covers Home/EU fees as well as provides a stipend (approximately £13,300 p.a).

Eligibility:

Only UK and EU applicants are eligible to apply. The ideal candidate would normally be expected to hold a 2:1 or First class honours degree plus an MSc, or equivalently an upper 5-year undergraduate degree if coming from Europe, with a background in operational research, statistics, mathematics, computer science or some other quantitative discipline relating to the project. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. Knowledge or experience in the use of one or more of the following is also highly desirable: optimization methods and algorithm design, CPLEX (or some other optimization package), computer programming (preferably C/C++ or Java), GIS, environmental economics, ecological/environmental modelling. Applications will be assessed based on previous academic achievements and relevant skills.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Monbukagakusho a.k.a. MEXT) of the Government of Japan offers scholarships to canadian students who wish to study at Japanese universities.

RESEARCH STUDIES

Applicants must have been born on or after April 2, 1976 (for the 2011 Program). The term of this scholarship for research (non-degree) students is 2 years beginning in April 2011 or 18 months beginning in October 2011. For master’s or doctorate students, the term of this scholarship is the period needed to complete degree requirements. Six months of Japanese language studies is included in either case. Applicants must be university graduates. The study area should be the same field that the applicant has studied, or a related field.

Amount awarded

In 2010, the allowance will be 152,000 yen per month (for research students), 154,000 yen per month (for master’s students), or 155,000 yen per month (for doctorate students). These terms may be subject to change.

Applications received will be evaluated and shortlisted candidates will be informed the date and venue of their audition by email or phone. Candidates who do not receive any communication by 1st of April 2010, must assume that their applications have not been successful.

Individuals who have been offered places at LAMDA for Stage Management or Acting would then need to go through the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation selection process by attending the Inlaks final selection interviews in Mumbai in May 2010.

Selection Criteria

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence. Financial circumstances are not taken into account.

If there is no candidate holding or expected to achieve the equivalent of UK First Class Honours Bachelors degree, from one of the ten countries, the award for that country may be transferred to a candidate from one of the other countries.

Value: Benefits and Duration

Scholarships are tenable for one year only, and normally consist of a one-off award of £5,000.

Where a selected Santander Master's Scholar subsequently gains a full (fees and maintenance) scholarship from another source (for example, under the UK Government Chevening scheme), the Santander Master's Scholarship will be awarded at the compensatory level of £2,000.

A scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.

Unless otherwise requested by the scholarship holder, the scholarship is usually set against tuition fees. If payment is made directly to the scholarship holder, the award is paid out in three instalments at the start of each term.
